Aspiring to win the crown

Barcelona won the informal league of summer signings! The team spent enormous amounts of money, signed two former NBAers, Nikola Mirotic and Alex Abrines, acquired Corey Higgins who used to play for CSKA Moscow and now aims to win the Euroleague throne.

Τhe brightest star: Νikola Mirotic! The Spanish power forward left the NBA last summer for the Catalan team and is the highest paid Euroleague player by far!

I know you from someplace: There are no players or coaches for the ‘blaugrana’ that has any connection to Greece. The closest connection, if any, is that of Coach Svetislav Pesic, who although has never worked in our country, had seen his son, Marko, wearing the Iraklis jersey (1999-2000).

Like a tourist: In case you travel to the Catalan capital to support our team, here are some tips. Barcelona is the Capital of the Sovereign Catalonia and has a population of 5 million.

Must see: The National museum of art of Catalonia, the artifacts by Gaudi, Casa Mila and Casa Batllo, La Sagrada Familia, the Picasso museum.

Must do: Walk the Boqueria market and the Ciutadella park.

Must eat: Paella,  canelones a la Barcelonesa (cannelloni with pork and chicken liver) and pernil (spiced pork shoulder).

Did you know that:

* Olympiacos won its first European Championship beating Barcelona 73-58 in the Rome Final Four final (1997).

* The second time the two teams met in a final (this time for the Paris Final Four in 2010), Barcelona won the title 86-68.

* The ‘reds’ got to win another European title eliminated Barcelona, but this time at the semis. This happened in the Istanbul Final Four (2012), when they won 68-64.

* Kostas Papanikolaou (2013-14) and Sasha Vezenkov (2015-18) have played for the Spanish team.
