Lost to Valencia in the last possession
Olympiacos was defeated by Valencia 85–84 at the Roig Arena, seeing its record drop to 22–12 in the EuroLeague.
For our team, Sasha Vezenkov was the top scorer with 17 points, while Tyson Ward also delivered a strong performance, finishing with 15 points. Evan Fournier nearly secured the win for the 'red & whites', but thanks to two free throws by De Larrea, the hosts took the victory.
Giorgos Bartzokas started the game with Walkup, Dorsey, Papanikolaou, Vezenkov, and Milutinov, and the Bulgarian forward was ideally fasciliated early on, scoring the team’s first 6 points. In a game full of intensity, Valencia, with its trademark energy, made things difficult for Olympiacos, while Evan Fournier, with a three-pointer shortly after entering the game, made it 15–19. The quarter ended with the hosts leading by 2 (25–23), with Sasha Vezenkov as the top scorer with 9 points.
In the second period, the coach expanded the rotation, and Tyson Ward and Alec Peters showed they were ready to step up. The two were excellent in the first 5' , before the familiar duo took over. Vezenkov and Milutinov were outstanding, and with a 3-pointer by Tyler Dorsey, Olympiacos went up by 9 (39–48).
The first half ended with an 8-point lead (42–50), with Vezenkov scoring 15 points and being the clear MVP of the half.
In the second half, the game became even more physical. Valencia went on a 7–0 run to cut the gap to a single point, while missed shots affected the focus of Bartzokas’ players. Nevertheless, with a three by Tyson Ward, Olympiacos regained the lead (62–64 in the 29th minute), and with a buzzer-beater by Walkup, the 'red & whites' maintained the same margin at the end of the quarter (67–69).
In the final ten minutes of the game, Olympiacos initially looked ready to take the win, as after a triple by Fournier, following Walkup’s 6th assist, the team went up by 7 points (67–74). However, Valencia had not said its last word. Brancou Badio hit a 3-pointer to reach 15 points and cut the deficit again, while Olympiacos’ frustrating inaccuracy allowed the hosts to bring the game down to the final possessions.
With a basket by Montero, Valencia went up by two (83–81, 27'' before the end), and Evan Fournier, with a big three-pointer, put Olympiacos back in front. However, the Frenchman committed a foul on Montero 2.9 seconds before the buzzer. De Larrea came in for the injured Dominican at that moment and, with 2/2 free throws, set the final score (85–84), as Fournier missed at the last second in a play where he might have been fouled.
The quarters: 25–23, 42–50, 67–69, 85–84.
