Top team, Olympiacos
One more great honor for the European and Greek Champion Olympiacos, since, during the annual event for the award of the best of the season organized by the Greek Association of Sports Journalists, the ‘reds’ were honored as the best team in Greece.
Mr. Panagiotis and Mr. Giorgos Angelopoulos were the ones to receive the honorable prize from the hand of the President of the Greek Olympic Committee Mr. Spyros Kapralos, accompanied by Vassilis Spanoulis as well as the remaining nine players that participated last and this season’s roster.
Dusan Ivkovic was also present at the event, who was awarded the coach of the Year prize, while Vassilis Spanoulis was among the three finalists for best athlete of the season.
Following the conclusion of the event, Mr. Panagiotis Angelopoulos commented: “We wish to thank all of the sports journalists that voted for us. That voted for Olympiacos. This award belongs to the whole of the team, the coach, to all those who worked to achieve last season’s success. I believe that what we experienced last season in Istanbul was something unique, we are going to participate more Final Fours, we may even win the Euroleague again, but we are never going to forget what we lived in Istanbul”.
Giorgos Angelopoulos answered on whether he and his brother had believed that Olympiacos could reach the top of Europe, apart from winning the Greek Championship: “After January and what we had witnessed up to that point, we came to believe that we would be able to make the Final Four. From that point on, you can only hope, one cannot know”.
As for this season and on whether Olympiacos is going to be among the top selections for the same awards, he said: “I think it’s very tough to convince the Media to accept you and acknowledge you. That’s why tonight’s recognition bears great siginificance. Our goal is to be here next year as well”.
